Polkadot SDK stable2609: node v1.25.0, 88 breaking crate changes, a Snowbridge fix
Serguey Asael Shinder1 min readParity published Polkadot stable2609 on 12 October, covering everything merged since the previous stable line, stable2606. The same release carries the tag polkadot-v1.25.0, and nodes built from it report version v1.25.0.
Breaking changes. By the release notes' count, 88 changes break compatibility under Rust's semantic-versioning rules, meaning at least one crate per change gets a new major version. For teams building runtimes and parachains on the SDK, that number is the headline: upgrading means working through crate-level API changes, not just bumping a version.
Security-relevant. Among the bridge changes is PR 12159, which "blocks an origin-spoofing attack vector" in the V2 outbound queue converter of Snowbridge (snowbridge-outbound-queue-primitives). The bridges section also tracks nested memory used by xcm::DoubleEncoded, removes the Polkadot Bulletin bridge code from the Rococo bridge hub and updates trie-db to 0.32.0.
XCM clean-up. Several long-deprecated items are removed from staging-xcm-builder and staging-xcm-executor, including CurrencyAdapter, ConvertedConcreteAssetId, FilterAssetLocation, ForeignChainAliasAccount, UnpaidLocalExporter and the JustTry and Identity re-exports. pallet-asset-conversion gains per-pair swap fees, falling back to the global liquidity-provider fee.
Smart contracts. In pallet-revive the release introduces per-transaction cold/hot storage access pricing, versions runtime API functions including trace_block, adds finalized, safe and pending block tags to eth_getLogs, and fixes a resource exhaustion issue when replaying finalized-block transactions.
Build platform. Parity is retiring its Debian bullseye build: starting with stable2612, the binaries it publishes will be compiled on Debian bookworm, and operators are pointed to upgrade instructions on the Polkadot Forum.
