Zcash's privacy and its planned speed-up were both on display in one day

What the shielded pool hides, and what it does not. CoinDesk reported that wallets linked to the 24 September Bitget breach moved 2,746 ZEC, about $3.9 million and roughly 15% of the ZEC taken, into Ironwood, Zcash's newest shielded pool, in three transfers. Inside the pool, senders, recipients and amounts are hidden. But the amount entering is visible, and so will be any amount leaving to a public address, so investigators can still compare entries and exits by timing and value. Why node software now matters to exchanges. Gemini said it replaced the Zebra node software with Zakura for its Zcash systems, cutting the time to catch up with the network from close to a day to just over six hours. That is the figure that decides how long deposits and withdrawals stay paused when an exchange's node crashes or falls behind. It matters more with NU7, the upgrade that would cut block times from 75 seconds to 25, so nodes must check new blocks three times as often. NU7 is due on the test network on 6 October, with developers targeting 5 November for mainnet after seeing the results. Gemini has not published tests of Zakura under the faster schedule. What connects them
Both stories are about what third parties can see and how fast. Privacy on Zcash is strong inside the pool and weaker at its edges, where exchanges and investigators operate. Speed is being added at the protocol level, but the experience users get still depends on how quickly each exchange's node can recover. NU7's test-network run on 6 October is the next data point for the second question; the first will be answered only when the shielded funds come out.
