bitcoin-rs, an independent full node in Rust, asks for outside verification
A new independent Bitcoin full node written in Rust, bitcoin-rs, was presented on the Delving Bitcoin forum on 28 September. Its author describes it as early work and, like btcd, as a separate implementation built to explore architectural and performance changes that are hard to pursue inside Bitcoin Core while remaining externally verifiable.
The post lists four main differences. The node owns the canonical UTXO set it validates against and also provides a read-only script index compatible with Esplora, so common wallet and explorer queries do not need a separate Electrum-style indexer. Its components, consensus, chainstate, storage, networking, mempool, indexing and orchestration, are kept small and separated so that failures stay contained. Synchronisation, storage, memory, concurrency and I/O are optimised together, with the stated goal of competitive whole-node performance against Bitcoin Core. And script validation can run either through the project's own Rust code or through libbitcoinkernel, the library that exposes Bitcoin Core's consensus code; the kernel path can serve as an oracle to cross-check the native one.
The authors say they are building a verification framework around several independent references: libbitcoinkernel as the consensus reference, bitcoinfuzz for differential and adversarial testing, Bitcoin Core's qa-assets corpus for known edge cases, and their own regression tests and benchmarks for sync, reorgs, recovery and storage. They ask for feedback and independent verification, especially of that approach.

What it means
Every alternative node faces the same question: how do you show that you enforce exactly the rules Bitcoin Core enforces, including its bugs? Using libbitcoinkernel as a live cross-check answers part of it, because disagreements surface as test failures rather than chain splits. The performance claims are goals, not measurements, and the project itself frames them as something to be reproduced by others.
